HOLLAND, Amsterdam -- A Sikh delegation representing an estimated 20,000 Dutch Sikhs expressed their condolences to the Royal Family and the Dutch people for the death of Prince Claus, 76, husband of Queen Beatrix of Holland.

The body of Prince Claus was placed at his palace Noordeinde in Den Haag, the capital of Holland, for the public to pay tribute and last farewell. During the four days that the body lay in state, over 95,000 people came to bid farewell to their departed king.

The Sikh delegation comprised of representatives from the three Gurdwaras of Den Haag, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. S. Bhupinder Singh of Holland represented the international Sikh community.

"Prince Claus had worked to reduce poverty, increase education, and create work opportunities in underdeveloped countries," said Bhupinder Singh.

Sikh delegation members laid flowers with two messages of grief at the Noordeinde Palace and participated in the eulogies. An Ardaas by Sikhs was aired live on National Dutch TV. Twenty Sikh men, women and children signed the mourning register.

"We were given a warm welcome and respect by the Dutch people, government, and press," said a spokesperson of the Sikh delegation.
